Resources to help if you are being hurt or controlled
This list is meant to be a starting point to navigate the many resources that exist for people who are being hurt or controlled. We recommend starting with any one of these resources and they should be able to help you get to what you need.
There are resources for specific communities, identities, and needs. Feel free to look through what is listed here, or call a program and talk to them about what you are looking for.

Domestic Violence Resources
- National Domestic Violence Hotline – 24/7 confidential advocacy, call text or chat. National. If you’re not sure where to start, this could be a good first call or text.

- The Center for Family Safety and Healing (TCFSH) – Make an appointment with an advocate or counselor specializing in relationship abuse and safety in or out of the relationship. Central Ohio. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. (614) 722-8293.
Sexual Assault Resources
- Ohio Sexual Violence Helpline – 24/7 confidential resource providing advocacy and support for survivors of sexual violence across Ohio. Staffed by trained advocates. Call or chat online. Statewide.

Healing for Youth Exposed to Violence
- OhioHeals.org – A resource directory for families, caregivers, and service providers working with victimized children, youth, and young people across Ohio.
Culturally Specific Domestic Violence Resources
Here are a few examples of culturally specific resources. If you’re looking for a specific cultural support, please ask any of the resources listed on this page to help you find what you are looking for.
- ASHA Ray of Hope – Serving women and children whose country of origin includes Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. ASHA also helps families from other countries who call the 24/7 hour helpline and will make appropriate referrals by partnering with other agencies in the community.

- BRAVO – The Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO) provides comprehensive individual and community programs for survivor advocacy and support to LGBTQI survivors of hate and bias violence, discrimination, intimate partner violence, stalking, and/or sexual assault. If you or someone you know has experienced violence, threats, or intimidation BRAVO can work with you to discuss ways to increase your safety.

- DWAVE (Deaf World Against Violence Everywhere) – Deaf-run agency providing direct advocacy service to the Deaf, Deaf Blind, Deaf Disabled, and Hard of Hearing Communities in response to oppression and relationship and sexual violence.
Legal Resources
It may be most helpful to partner with a domestic violence advocate / agency alongside these other resources.
A Healthy Relationship Has:
- Trust—the ability to believe in each other’s words and actions, no need to “prove” themselves
- Honesty—being open and truthful with each other.
- Good Communication—the ability to talk openly about problems, while listening to each other. Respecting each other’s opinions, especially when opinions differ.
- Respect—valuing each other for who they are without trying to change the other person. This includes valuing each other’s emotional, physical, sexual, spiritual, and digital boundaries.
- Equality—making decisions together and holding each other to the same standards in the relationship.
Some Examples of Abusive Behaviors Include:
- Name-calling
- Driving dangerously
- Threatening you
- Throwing objects or destroying things
- Hurting you, including your head, neck or face or making it hard for you to breathe. Click here for more information.

- Controlling money and bank accounts
- Not allowing you to disagree or make mistakes
- Denying you respect and independence
- Offering choices that don’t feel like real choices /setting you up to fail either way
- Isolation from friends and family
- Controlling your daily activities, monitoring your communications
- Using location tracking and accusing you of lying or cheating
- Ignoring your wishes around touching and sex
- Undermining your parenting
